Paula Russell (aka 'buglegirl') was born in the south of England and began to play the cornet at the age of eight.

 

She has performed internationally as a soloist and band musician and has won many accolades as both. Throughout her studies Paula has had the opportunity to study with many fine musicians including Professor David King, David Daws, Russell Gray, Trevor Bremner and many more.

 

Most recently Paula won the 2006 Ern Keller International Brass Soloist of the Year in Sydney, Australia. Other awards include 2005 Queensland State Solo Champion of Champions, British Open Cornet Champion and the 'Harry Mortimer Brass Student of the Year.

 

As a band performer, Paula was a former member of the Yorkshire Building Society Band (now YBS) and during this time won many competitions: British Open Band Championships (1999, 2001), European Brass Band Championships (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003), The All England Masters (1999, 2000).

 

Currently, Paula is principal cornet with current Australian Band Champions, Brisbane Excelsior and performed with them during their tour to England during 2006.

 

As well as a performer Paula also teaches cornet for the University of Queensland and participates in many music camps. Most recently Paula was a cornet tutor for the Queensland Youth Band Summer Camp 2007 and is also a very active private tutor.
